The Slovek Ranch, owned by Bill and Pennie and their son, Bo, hosted a good crowd for their best sale ever. Bill and Pennie produce the Angus Plus Hybrid genetics, and Bo has the Registered Angus bulls in the sale.

It has been very gratifying to watch this program progress from their first sale just a few years ago. The composite bulls are made up of Angus and Gelbvieh bloodlines, along with Simmental blood to round out the maternal and carcass characteristics.

This year’s sale bulls had a lot of uniformity all the way through. These bulls are wintered in a big pasture and they are hard as a rock by sale time. It is very good to see the many repeat buyers back to buy these bulls.

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 14, the yearling Angus bull, BS Highwayman 300, a son of Baldridge Waylon W34 and out of a daughter of GAR Preeminent. He had EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 58, YW 102, MILK 25, MARB 0.83, and RE 0.73. Born at 77 lb., he weaned at 702 lb. and grew to a yearling weight of 1,219 lb. His scrotal measurement was 37.2 cm., with a rib eye of 16.4 sq. in. and an IMF of 4.8 percent. The new owners at $17,000 were Idland Cattle Co., Circle, Mont., Stevenson Diamond Dot, Hobson, Mont., and Circle L Angus, Dillon, Mont.

The Lot 15 Angus bull was next in line with a purchase price of $10,500. He was bought by Spear U Angus, Wall, S.D. Sired by Baldridge Waylon W34, he was out of a daughter of GT Shear Force. His EPDs included BW 2.6, WW 64, YW 118, MILK 29, MARB 1.14, and RE 0.30. This cow has produced several embryo sons in other herds.

The Bonenberger Ranch, Belvidere, S.D., made Lot 35 their top selection at $8,750. This Black Angus Plus son of Sharper Image was out of a daughter of Retail Product who has ratioed 109 on her calves. With a 91 lb. birth weight, he weaned at 721 lb. to ratio 115 and posted a yearling weight of 1383 lb. He was 66 percent Angus and 34 percent Simmental.

Kyle Grace, Sioux Falls, S.D., chose Lot 19, an Angus bull at $7500. This son of SAV Final Answer was out of the same cow as the Lot 15 bull. He had a 90 lb. birth weight and a weaning weight of 679 lb. His yearling weight was 1,298 lb., and he measured a 40.8 cm. scrotal and a rib eye of 14.9 sq. in.

Lot 56 sold for $7,000 to repeat buyer Brad Bonhorst, Pierre, S.D. Here was a son of Destined who was out of a Grandmaster daughter. He weaned at 722 lb. to ratio 115 and had gained 4.15 lb. a day on test. He was one of the high gaining Angus Plus bulls in the sale. He was 58 percent Angus and 42 percent Simmental. Brad Bonhorst also took along Lot 58 at $6,500, a composite bull sired by Manifest and out of a daughter of Peer Reviewed.

The Sloveks also sold 28 Black Angus heifer pairs with the calves AI sired by the $75,000 PA Fortitude bull. They brought $2,800 each. Four Red Angus pairs sold for $2,700 each.

Volume discounts were available, along with breeding season guarantees. The Slovek sale is a good place to find just the right combination of genetics to complement many cow herds.
