Sodak Angus Ranch Fall Calving Production Sale

Scott Dirk
Vaughn Meyer welcomes the crowd at the Sodak Angus Fall calving female sale.

Vaughn and Lois Meyer and the crew at Sodak Angus ranch held their fall-calving bred cow sale at the ranch on June 4, 2011. A beautiful early-summer day greeted the decent crowd of buyers that were on hand to purchase this nice set of bred females. Also in the sale were two excellent Sodak-bred herd bulls.

Sodak Angus has been ranching in Sorum/Reva area for more than 100 years, and fall-calving cow for 30 of those years. Developing a fall-calving program in northwestern South Dakota can be challenging because that means breeding is taking place in November and December – a time of the year when the weather can be problematic. Each year Sodak Angus has retained the cream of the spring calving herd for the fall program, resulting in a very fertile, productive fall calving cowherd.

The top-selling herd bull was Sodak Upward U322, a 2/9/08 son of Sitz Upward 307. This proven herd sire has EPDs of BW 3.2, WW 63, YW 119 and Milk 37, with individual weaning and yearling ratios of 115. The buyer was CRV-USA, Madison WI, at $10,000.

Selling at $4,250 was Sodak Marathon U392, a 2/17/08 son of BC Marathon 7022 with EPDs of BW 4.1, WW 56, YW 91 and Milk 22. LaGrand Scotch Cap West, Bison, SD, was the buyer.

Topping the cow sale was Lot 32, Sodak Ollive S113, a 4/2/06 daughter of Sodak Prime Rib M304 with EPDs of BW 2.9, WW 44, YW 74 and Milk 25. This cow was out of the ET program and she sold open and ready to flush or breed, to Carlson Angus, Regent, ND, for $3,200.

Leo Huninghake, Frankfort, KS, purchased the next two top-selling cows. Both were also out of the embryo program and sold open and ready to breed or flush. Lot 33, Sodak Eileen S059, is a 3/3/06 daughter of Sodak Prime Rib M304 with EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 48, YW 88 and Milk 27, and sold for $3,100. Selling at $3,000 was Lot 34, Sodak Blackbird S048, a 3/1/06 daughter of Sitz Future Direction 9193 with EPDs of BW 4.3, WW 60, YW 101 and Milk 29.

Two bred heifers topped out at $2,300 each:

Lot 3, Sodak Erica W014, a 2/21/09 daughter of HA Program 5652 with EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 51, YW 90 and Milk 20, sold bred to HA Image Maker to calve in August, to Burgess Angus, Homedale, ID.

Lot 12, Sodak Black Lady W154, a 3/23/09 daughter of LeMar Windy 117P with EPDs of BW 2.7, WW 49, YW 85 and Milk 20, was bred to HA Program 5652 to calve in August, sold to Carlson Angus, Regent, ND.
