Sonstegard Cattle Company 7th Annual Bull Sale

The Sonstegards held their 7th annual bull sale April 9 at the ranch near Montevideo, MN. It was quite a change of scenery traveling to this sale from northwestern Nebraska. The Nebraska territory could have used a rain, but western Minnesota had plenty, with ample amounts of snow melt. The main road to the Sonstegard ranch had water running over it, and the other access road had several soft spots.

Even though the road conditions were not the best, the cattle were. Gary and Elaine Sonstegard, along with sons Tyler and Tory, took advantage of the higher calf prices and culled this year’s bull crop deeper than they ever have. Heavy culling and aggressive herd sire selection resulted in the best offering of bulls to date.

Topping the sale was Lot 5, 3SCC Rimgard X334, a 3/17/10 son of Leland Rim 441-7048T. This top herd sire prospect has EPDs of BW -2.0, WW 39, YW 66, Milk 18 and TM 38 with a weaning ratio of 110 and yearling ratio of 107. Long-time repeat buyer, Kemen Red Angus from Madison, MN, was the buyer at $8,000 (half interest and possession).

Lot 8, 2RJL Cordoba X962, a 2/27/10 son of Red Six Mile Sakic 832S, sold to Robert Ziebart, Plankinton, SD, for $6,000 (half interest and possession). This bull has EPDs of BW 1.7, WW 40, YW 80, Milk 18 and TM 38 with a WR of 110 and YR of 116.
