South Dakota 4-H Horse Judges’ training set for July 22 in Huron

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service and the South Dakota 4-H Horse Committee will host a horse judging training session on July 22 at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron.

The seminar starts with registration at 8:45 a.m. and it concludes at 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required and due by July 1. To register, call your county Extension office, or call Extension Equine Specialist Rebecca Bott at 605-688-5412, or call Donna Schwartz at 605-360-6265.

Applications and fees should be mailed to Lindsey Gerard, SAG 122, Box 2207E, SDSU, Brookings, SD 57007. Checks should be made payable to the South Dakota 4-H Horse Project.

The seminar costs $10 for spectators. Staff will cover the competitive classes included at the South Dakota State 4-H Horse Show, the Danish System, the 4-H philosophy, judging mechanics, ethics and scoring, showmanship equitation, Hunter Over Fences, reining, Western riding, trail driving, roping, timed events, judging, and it concludes with a written test.

Participants who wish to become certified judges must complete an application and pay $30. To become a certified judge, participants must attend the seminar, pass the judging and written portion of the seminar with a score of 80 percent or higher, and recertify every three years.

Judges who hold current National Breed cards must apply to become 4-H judges. These judges may forego the training clinic, but must familiarize themselves with the South Dakota 4-H Horse Show rulebook, pass the written test, pay $20, and submit an application along with copies of his or her current breed card or cards.
