South Dakota 4-H horse quiz-bowl team takes fifth place at nationals

BROOKINGS, SD – The South Dakota 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl Team placed fifth overall in the Western National 4-H Roundup Horse Quiz Bowl Contest held at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

South Dakota Cooperative Extension Livestock Educator Robin Salverson served as the team’s coach. The team included Stephanie Johnson, daughter of Linda Johnson of Belle Fourche; Rianna Schaeffer, daughter of Renae Schaeffer of Belle Fourche; Samantha Sleep, daughter of Jeff and Jodi Sleep of Spearfish; and Fehrin Ward, daughter of Vern and Laurie Ward of Fruitdale. They earned the right to represent South Dakota at the national contest because they were the top team at the South Dakota State 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl Contest held last summer.

The team took fifth place among several teams. Individually, Stephanie Johnson placed third overall.



The Western National 4-H Roundup Horse Quiz Bowl Contest is one of the nation’s most challenging competitions for youth interested in horses, attracting top young people from across the U.S. each year. A highly competitive event for young people ages 14-18, the contest provides participants with an opportunity to develop skills in evaluation, decision-making, communication, self-discipline and responsibility.

The Livestock Industry Trust Fund sponsored the team during their travel, preparation, and competition.
