South Dakota 4-H livestock judging team places second at North American International Livestock Exposition

South Dakota 4-H Livestock Judging Team Place Second at North American International Livestock Exposition

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Competing against 32 teams from across the nation, South Dakota 4-H Livestock Judging Team placed second at the North American International Livestock Exposition held in Louisville, Kentucky Nov. 1-17, 2016.

Members of the South Dakota Livestock Judging Team include; Cagney Effling, Hyde County; Tyler Bush, Marshall County; Colin Weidenbach, Hyde County and Chesney Effling, Hyde County. The team’s coaches were Daniel Weidenbach and Kristi Effling.



“Through livestock judging these youth develop leadership and communication skills that will serve them well into adulthood,” said Falyn Hogg, SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor – Faulk, Hand, Hyde & Potter Counties. “Skills like evaluation, objectivity, agriculture industry knowledge, problem solving, and public speaking.”

For their high ranking in this national contest, Hogg said the South Dakota 4-H Livestock Judging team was invited to compete in an international judging contest in Scotland.



“The South Dakota teams hard work and dedication to excellence earned them the second place overall team title for the 2016 North American International Livestock Exposition National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest,” Hogg said.

The contest was made up of 127 individual contestants from 32 teams.

These participants judged 11 classes, three questions classes and took part in four sets of oral reasons.

Awards were given for overall contest placings for teams and individuals. Awards were also broken down into specific categories those areas included: Cattle, Performance Cattle, Reasons, Sheep and Goat, and Swine.

The South Dakota team received top honors in many areas of the contest including:

Cattle:

South Dakota awarded first place team

Tyler Bush awarded second place individual

Cagney Effling awarded fifth place individual

Performance Cattle:

Tyler Bush awarded first place individual

Cagney Effling awarded seventh place individual

Reasons:

South Dakota awarded sixth place team

Cagney Effling awarded second place individual

Tyler Bush awarded tenth place individual

Swine:

South Dakota awarded thirteenth place team

Overall awards were presented to Cagney Effling, third high overall individual and Tyler Bush, fourth high overall individual.

Bush and Effling also achieved All American status. Also recognized were, Colin Weidenbach awarded sixty-eighth place and Chesney Effling awarded ninty-seventh place.
