South Dakota: Beginning horse ownership workshop May 4 in Forestburg
April 22, 2011
BROOKINGS, SD – Staff from the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service will host a workshop for newcomers to horse riding and horse ownership on May 4.
The free workshop follows the format of a South Dakota 4-H Horse Fair, and it starts at 3 p.m. at the Sanborn County 4-H Building and Horse Arena located in Forestburg. Call event organizer Irene Graves at 605-796-4380 to sign up or for more information.
Demonstrations during the workshop will include an explanation on healthy teeth in horses and the importance of vaccinations for horses. Extension Livestock Educator John Madison also will explain nutrition for horses. Another session will focus on trimming hooves. The workshop also includes a breed row, commercial booths and vendors. Sanborn County 4-Hers and others will lead demonstrations. The event features a demonstration by experts in the Parelli Natural Horsemanship method. Farrah Green and Erin McCord are among the instructors.
The workshop includes a silent auction of donated items and a concession stand will be open on the grounds. All proceeds from the auction and other sale will go to the Sanborn County 4-H Show Ring “roof raising” fund. At 7 p.m., a grand finale will be held to demonstrate the Parelli Natural Horsemanship method, including a explanation of this foundation of horsemanship skills many say are essential to all breeds and disciplines.
“Farrha Green and Erin McCord will demonstrate how they incorporate trust, respect, and what they call ‘horsenality’ in the training of their steeds,” said event organizer Irene Graves, an Extension educator from Sanborn County. “Their demo will incorporate confidence and responsiveness and the necessity of foundation before specialization in base horsemanship.”
The Sanborn County Warren Pals and Gals 4-H Club, Sanborn County 4-H Leaders Association and the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service are sponsoring the event.
