South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association to honor members at Watertown convention
The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association (SDCA) will honor members for their dedication to the organization and for environmental stewardship efforts during the upcoming 68th Annual Convention and Trade Show scheduled for November 29 – December 1 at the Watertown Event Center and Ramkota.
“The 2016 Leopold Conservation Award was presented to Cronin Farms of Gettysburg and we are pleased to recognize them during our Awards Banquet on Wednesday evening. Monty and Mike Cronin, along with their agronomy manager, Dan Forgey, exemplify a holistic approach to crop and livestock management,” said Todd Wilkinson, SDCA President.
The Leopold Conservation Award recognizes private landowners for their voluntary conservation efforts and is presented by the Sand County Foundation in partnership with the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association and the South Dakota Grassland Coalition.
Cronin Farms’ diversified family business includes rotational grazing and integrates forage and cover crops in the crop rotation. With a sizable portion of their farm and ranch adjacent to the Oahe reservoir, they also attract a large and diverse wildlife population, which they further encourage by deferring grazing on nearly 40 acres used by ground nesting birds during critical nesting periods.
“We commend the Cronin family and Dan Forgey for their commitment to conservation and look forward to highlighting their award-winning practices during our Convention. In addition, we will recognize and thank our members who have gone above and beyond as Top Hand membership recruiters and name our Cattleman of the Year and Friend of SDCA honorees,” noted Wilkinson.
“We applaud these folks for their hard work and willingness to give back to our industry.”
Following the awards banquet, ventriloquist James Wedgewood will show you the most fun you can have without moving your lips.
