South Dakota: Cow-calf producer short coures set for Timber Lake, Martin and Winner

BROOKINGS, SD – The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service will host three short course management training programs for cow-calf producers starting in December.

The cow-calf management training will take place in Martin, Timber Lake and Winner. Each short course consists of four formal meetings over two months, then a fifth meeting and an on-site visit from trainers in the program.

The program costs $60 and the deadline to register for the training is Dec. 3. To sign up, call Extension Associate Mindy Hubert at the West River Ag Center at 605-394-2236, or e-mail her at Mindy.Hubert@sdstate.edu.

The Timber Lake and Winner training sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time and staff will provide a lunch at each session. The Martin location will be held from noon to 5 p.m. with lunch at 11:30 a.m. The locations and dates include:

• Dec. 7, Jan. 4, Jan. 20 and Feb. 8 at the Wild West Steakhouse, 865 W. Second St., Winner.

• Dec. 8, Jan. 5, Jan. 19 and Feb. 9 at the Timber Lake Activity Center, Main Street, Timber Lake.

• Dec. 9, Jan. 6, Jan. 27 and Feb. 10 at the Bennett County Public Library Learning Center, 101 Main St., Martin.

Extension Beef Specialist Julie Walker said the focus of the short-course program is to help cow-calf producers who want to develop strategic plans for management decisions and in doing so, reduce input costs.

“The information producers gain from this program can help them manage their range resources and improve their bottom line,” said Walker. “The five class sessions and the ranch visit will really help them evaluate their operations and make the changes that suit them on a ranch-by-ranch basis.”

Producers will learn about strategic planning, risk management, SPA production and other topics based on their input in the first sessions.
