April 22, 2011
BROOKINGS, SD – A new South Dakota State University publication explains budgeting and understanding of horse ownership.
SDSU Extension Extra 2074, “Understanding the Cost of Horse Ownership,” is available at this link: http://pubstorage.sdstate.edu/AgBio_Publications/articles/exex2074.pdf. Or ask for it at your county Extension office.
Extension Livestock Educator Tracey Renelt wrote the four-page publication that defines the costs and expenses that come along with owning a horse. She marks all the most-expensive items a person would need to let them review their decisions before buying.
Renelt explains not only the initial purchase price of the horse, but the continuing costs that can include feed, farrier, veterinary and health care, bedding and also boarding. She also charts facility expenses based on cost of materials only and basic horse equipment expenses.
The publication explains to those people considering horse ownership the various expenses they should evaluate prior to making the final purchase of a horse.
