South Dakota: Outdoor Expo Dutch oven cook-off results
The 2011 South Dakota Outdoor Expo brought out some of the best Dutch oven cooks in the South Dakota for the Cabela Dutch Oven Challenge and the Fellowship of Christian Sportsmen (FCS) Plus & Cabela Wild Game Cook Off. Nine teams composed of eighteen cooks created 30 delicious dishes, which were sampled by the public after judging. Hundreds of Expo visitors enjoyed this unique way of outdoor cooking, and were impressed with the skill of the Dutch oven enthusiasts.
Adding to the fun of the weekend, there were cooks present from both east and western South Dakota and visitors who cooked at the first South Dakota State Dutch Oven Gathering (DOG) on Sunday Morning.
Saturday’s winners were:
Main course: 1. Shona and Brian Thompson and Nancy Neve, Sioux Falls, SD with an Apricot Almond Pork Roast; 2. Kent and Elaine Bales, Huron, SD with Beef and Veggie Pie; and 3. Dallas and Carol Dohlman, Magnolia, MN with Pheasant Breast Deluxe.
Dessert: 1. Kent and Elaine Bales, Huron, SD with Turtle Cake; 2. Kent and Elaine Bales, Huron, SD with Pineapple Upside Down Cake; and 3. Dallas and Carol Dohlman, Magnolia, MN with Blueberry Peach Cobbler.

The FCS Plus & Cabela Wild Game Cook Off was a fun event modeled after the old rendezvous wild game cooking contests. Although contestants could have brought dishes from home, such as pressured canned meats or dried jerky, all dishes were cooked at the fairgrounds this year. FCS Plus provided additional game meat that was used at the contest and the next morning at the DOG, including pheasant, wild turkey, moose, elk and venison.
This was a great event with potential to grow and a very positive way to promote enjoying the wild game harvested in South Dakota. The key to this event was the Grand Prize awarded to the overall best dish – a one-day guided fishing trip by Waubay Lake Guide Service.
There were three categories contestants competed in: Fur, fin or feather.
Overall Grand Prize: Dallas and Carol Dohlman, Magnolia, MN with Wrapped Deer Loin.
Fur division: 1. Clell and Cole Swanson, Canton, SD with Moose Lasagne; 2. Shona and Brian Thompson and Nancy Neve, Sioux Falls, SD with Deer Stew; and 3. Shona and Brian Thompson and Nancy Neve, Sioux Falls, SD with Moose Pie.

Feather division: 1. Jim and Jill Johnsen, Wessington, SD with Creamy Wild Rice Soup with Pheasant; 2. Luinea and Regina Cauldwell, Brandon, SD with Pheasant Chili; and 3. Kent and Elaine Bales, Huron, SD with Pheasant Parmesan.
