South Dakota: Rangeland Days and Soils Day set for June 21-22 in Lemmon

The 7th Annual Soils Days, and 28th Annual Rangeland Days, is scheduled for June 21-22 in Lemmon, SD. The two coinciding events provide an opportunity to learn more about two of South Dakota’s most important resources – soils and rangelands. Learning activities have been designed for a variety of age groups and expertise, from eight years old through adult.

Starting with plant morphology and identification through judging habitat suitable for cattle or grouse, everyone attending Rangeland Days is sure to gain from participating. Divisions are determined by experience level and age as of Jan. 1: New Rangers (8-10 years old); Wranglers (11-13 years old); Scouts (14-18 years old); Go Getters (14-18 years old); and Old Rangers (adults). The Scouts division is for students who have little or no range judging experience.

After a day of active learning, participants have the opportunity to measure how much they have learned by participating in a contest, again, designed specifically for their age levels and expertise.

The cost of Soils Days and Rangeland Days is $25 each, including meals. Pre-registration is due by June 1 by contacting the Perkins County Conservation District, PO Box 189, Bison, SD 57620. Team members will be designated at the Armory during final registration June 21 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Anyone registering after June 1 will be subject to an additional $5 late fee. Call 605-244-5222, Ext. 3 with questions.
