South Dakota: SDCA Young Producer’s Council Cattlemen at the Capitol’ event Jan. 19-20 in Pierre
The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association (SDCA) Young Producer’s Council (YPC) will be hosting their 2nd annual “Cattlemen at the Capitol” event on Jan. 19-20 in Pierre.
The event kicks off on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 10:30 a.m. where SDCA Executive Director, Jodie Hickman, will discuss the structure and purpose of various beef industry organizations. On Wednesday afternoon, young producer attendees will participate in SDCA’s Board of Directors meeting, where they will learn more about legislative issues impacting cattlemen. The evening will include supper at the Cattlemen’s Club and a presentation on lobbying and the legislative process by SDCA lobbyist Brenda Foreman and South Dakota Farm Bureau lobbyist Mary Duvall. Following supper there will be a brief Young Producer’s Council meeting.
The event concludes Thursday morning when YPC members attend House and Senate Ag Committee meetings to experience the legislative process first-hand.
“Cattlemen at the Capitol provides younger SDCA members the opportunity to engage with the association’s leaders and gain first-hand knowledge about how business is handled within the organization. We’ll also experience the Legislative process at the Ag Committee meetings. Last year we heard great testimony and realized the importance of participating during committee meetings,” stated YPC President, Britton Blair.
The cost of this event is $10 for SDCA YPC members. For non-members the cost is $40 (fee will be waived if a membership is purchased).
Hotel rooms for Wednesday night will be provided by the SDCA Young Producer’s Council. To ensure motel availability, RSVP to Cayla Christiansen at the SDCA office no later than Friday, Jan. 14, 2011.
