South Dakota: Two calving workshops set for Dec. 22 in Leola and Britton
BROOKINGS, SD – The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service will host a pair of workshops for cow-calf producers on Dec. 22.
The free workshops are focused on preparing cowherds for the next months, years and decades. The first will begin at 10 a.m. at the Leola Fire Hall in Leola. The second is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Britton Community Building in Britton.
A meal will be served at each workshop and registration to ensure a proper count of meals is encouraged. To register for the Leola event, call the McPherson County Extension office at 605-439-3331. To register for the Britton event, call the Marshall County Extension office at 605-448-5171.
The agenda at both meetings is the same, and will include sessions on developing heifers before they are born, along with calving intervention perspective from a veterinarian. The sessions also will include a focus on newborn-calf care to improve long-term health, and a segment looking at high-priced corn and how cattle producers can compete.
People who need accommodations for disabilities or special needs are welcome to attend. Let either Extension office know about the necessary accommodations when you register to attend.
Many livestock producers are utilizing stockpiled pasture, hay regrowth and warm- or cool-season annuals to extend the grazing season this fall.
