Spearfish contestant wins South Dakota Beef Cook-off
Lisa Gabriel of Spearfish was the winner of a Weber Genesis Grill during the South Dakota Beef Cook-off held recently in Pierre. The Cook-off was sponsored by the South Dakota CattleWomen, the South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) and Schlachter Lumber of Pierre.
The winning recipe was titled “Japanese Hamburger” – a quick and easy beef dish.
Taking home second place honors along with the People’s Choice award was Barbara Wyatt of Rapid City with “Mu-Shu Beef-in-a-Pocket.”
Third place ended in a tie between Kelsey Johnson of Miller and Barry Higginbotham of Fort Pierre. Johnson’s recipe was titled “Individual Beef Wellingtons” and Higginbotham prepared “Barry’s Beef Stroganoff.”
Following the judging of the competition, spectators were allowed to sample the contestants’ recipes. Several of the SD CattleWomen had beef snacks to share with the passersby to highlight other recipes that can be made with beef.
The meat for the contest was furnished by the SD CattleWomen and each contestant received a gift bag of beef related items.
Judges for the event were 2007 Beef Ambassador Suzanne Swett from Platte, Ruth Anne Farnsworth of Carter, and Jan Jarding of Alexandria.
