Spickler Ranch held their annual production sale at the ranch near Glenfield, ND, on May 2, 2011. A beautiful, sunny day greeted the standing room only crowd of enthusiastic buyers and bidders that were on hand for the sale.

Brothers Justin and Nathan Spickler and their families are the third generation of Spicklers to raise registered cattle on this ranch. They are dedicated to producing herd changing genetics to that will be profitable for their customers. Since the 1940s when Spickler Ranch started, they have demanded that their cattle be sound, functional and adaptable to extreme changes in weather. The mother cows need to have excellent udders and mothering ability with very few calving problems, breed back in a reasonable time frame and bring in a heavy calf at weaning time without the benefits of creep feed.

This year’s sale bulls were very uniform, thick and deep bodied. They were sired by the most popular up and coming herd bulls in the Angus breed. One of these particular herd bulls, S Chisum 6175, was bred and raised at Spickler Ranch selling to Genex in their 2007 sale. The three top-selling bulls in the sale were sired by Chisum.

The heifers were the “front pasture” kind, showing femininity, length and were very uniform across the board.

The top-selling bull on the day was Lot 168, S Chisum 0139, a 3/21/10 son of S Chisum 6175 that sold to Gardner & Denowh Angus, Sidney, MT, for $29,000. This herd sire prospect posted EPDs of BW 2.3, WW 51, YW 90 and Milk 22, with a weaning ratio of 111 and yearling ratio of 107.

Selling at $22,500 to Vermillion Angus, Billings, MT, was Lot 178. Another top herd sire prospect, S Chisum 0224, is a 3/26/10 son of S Chisum 6175 with EPDs of BW 1.7, WW 56, YW 97 and Milk 22 with a weaning ratio of 110 and yearling ratio of 111.

Select Sires Inc., Plain City, OH, bid $15,000 to add Lot 163, S Chisum 0110, to their herd sire lineup. This 3/20/10 son of S Chisum 6175 posted EPDs of BW 0.1, WW 58, YW 97 and Milk 30, with an IMF ratio of 115.
