48 Charolais bulls: $4,484
These bulls were really stout and thickmade – the best overall set of bulls, top to bottom, they’ve ever sold. There was lots of bidding, especially on the top end. Many good cattlemen return each year to bid on these bulls, as they’ve found success using these genetics.
We were not surprised to find another cold winter day and, like usual, these bulls looked good as they entered the sale ring. This sale is a combination of two good herds – Jeff and Linda Stewart from Lake Preston, S.D., and Travis and Deb Steffensen from Arlington, S.D.. The Stewarts and the Steffensens are good cattlemen to work with as they help you find the right bulls for your herd. These bulls were well received by the big crowd at Madison Livestock, and this sale included fall born yearling bulls and coming yearlings.
Top selling bull of the day was Lot 1, selling for $8,750, and purchased by Gruener Charolais, Clear Lake, S.D. This Jan. 1, 2013, bull was sired by WCR Sir Tradition 9407P, and out of a daughter of RC Sirloin 6111 polled. He was out of a first calf heifer, and was full of performance. Born at 92 lb., he weaned at 793 lb. His EPDs were BW -0.1, WW 41, YW 73, and MTNL 30.
Repeat buyer, Dave Miller, Howard, S.D., found his top choice in Lot 31, a son of Double-H Hot Water 028X. His mother was a daughter of GC/4L Mr Spur 702 polled. This high performance bull was born at 91 lb. and weaned at 852 lb. He posted EPDs of BW 1.3, WW 40, and YW 65. His new owner paid $ 7500 to take him home.
At $7,000, Lot 11, JS Sir Ledger 1201 polled, became the property of Zack Benson, Colton, S.D. His sire, LT Ledger 0332P, was a high seller in his own right, out of the Lindskov-Thiel sale. His dam goes back to PF Infinite Justice. This bull was born on 08-25-12 at 81 lb. He weaned at 842 lb. and posted EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 34, and YW 63.
Another bull at $7,000 was Lot 9, son of One Penny Blanco Flash 6424. His mother was a daughter of WCR OZ Sir Duke 1155 PET. Born at 90 lb., he weaned at 769 lb. and posted EPDs of BW -1.6, WW 32, YW 65, MILK 14, and MTNL 30. His new owners were Matt and Jesse Stenson, Lidgerwood, N.D.
The gavel fell at $6,500 and Zack Benson owned another bull, Lot 18. This was another son of One Penny Blanco Flash 6424, and he weighed 92 lb. at birth. He had a good weaning weight of 826 lb. and EPDs of BW 1.1, WW 32, and YW 62.
Lot 3 brought $6,500 from Brady Schofield, Midland, S.D. This high performance bull was powerful in many ways, and out of an excellent cow. Another son of One Penny Blanco Flash 6424, his mother was a daughter of SCR Sir Impressive 387P. He had a 92 lb. birth weight, and weaned at 763 lb. His EPDs included BW 0.6, WW 32, YW 66 and MTNL 20.
Dale Foster, Estelline, S.D., selected Lot 12 at $6,500. Sired by EC Tender Maker 4029 PLD, he was out of a daughter of SCR Sir Gold 027 PLD. This bull was pictured in the catalog and was impressive to see in the ring. Born at 82 lb., he posted a weaning weight of 819 lb. His EPDs were BW 0.6, WW 25, YW 44, and MTNL 17.
The Stewarts and Steffensens appreciate their customers, and work each year to bring bulls to the sale with good performance numbers in a package that also delivers calving ease.
