Stomprud Angus Ranch 10th Annual Production Sale
Date: April.15, 2014
Location: Philip Livestock Auction
Auctioneer: Jon Millar, Sturgis, S.D.
Reported by: Dan Piroutek
Average: 25 bulls – $3,610
Stomprud Angus Ranch, owned by Larry and Eileen Stomprud, Mud Butte, S.D., hosted a good crowd of neighbors, friends, and repeat buyers for their annual bull sale. This sale offered both yearling and two year old Angus bulls.
The Stomprud program has focused on providing functional animals for the “hard grass” prairies of western South Dakota. They use AI sires with balanced EPDs that have excellent growth and maternal traits, along with good carcass quality.
Due to the October blizzard, Larry weaned his calves later, and did not push them along until the last few weeks before the sale. The bulls were in modest flesh, and readily accepted by this aggressive crowd.
This was also Jon Millar’s first sale as a purebred auctioneer, and I’d have to say that he did an excellent job!
Top selling bull of the day was Lot 1, selling for $5,500 to Norman Delbridge and Lee Mortenson, Howes, S.D. This son of Mr JT Total Package 622 was out of a daughter of ALC Big Eye D09N. Here was a good looking bull in a complete package with a light birth weight and plenty of growth. He had EPDs of CED 10, BW -0.2, WW 59, YW 97, and MILK 27. With a 78 lb. birth weight, he weaned at 706 lb.
At $5,250, another top selection for the team of Norman Delbridge and Lee Mortenson was found in Lot 15. Here was a son of the increasingly popular bull, Flag Right Cross 10017. Out of a Centennial Vision 636 bred dam, he was born at 93 lb. and then grew to a weaning weight of 689 lb. His EPDs were BW 4.4, WW 58, YW 92, and MILK 24.
Buck Ward, Timber Lake, S.D., chose Lot 4 at $4,750. A son of Hoover Dam, he was out of a Mr. JT Total Package mother with a weaning ratio of 2 @ 103. His EPDs included BW 0.9, WW 56, YW 91, and MILK 30. Born at 84 lb., he reached a weaning weight of 725 lb.
Lot 24 sold to Steve Knutson, Philip, S.D., for $4,500. This two year old bull was sired by Mr. JT Total Package 622 and out of a dam by Centennial Vision who was a Pathfinder with a nursing ration of 7 @ 106 and a yearling ration of 3 @ 103. He had EPDs of BW 2.4, WW 54, YW 81, and MILK 23.
Ken Snyder, Piedmont, S.D., bought Lot 27 at $4,000. This grandson of Hoover was another two year old bull, and he was sired by Pine Creek 0199. Out of a daughter of GAR Retail Product, he posted EPDs of BW 2.4, WW 40, YW 75, and MILK 28.
Hovland Herefords, Milesville, S.D., along with Ken Snyder, Piedmont, S.D., were the volume buyers on this sale.
