Summitcrest Angus hosted their annual spring bull sale at the ranch near Broken Bow, NE on March 15. This was their 32nd annual sale and 2010 marked the 62nd anniversary in the registered Angus business, with 72 years of continuous livestock production.

Usually when Summitcrest Angus holds a sale you can plan on a blizzard, it doesn’t seem to matter if it’s in October, December or March. However this year was different. Although there was some mud, this year’s sale day was beautiful and sunny.

The Summitcrest bulls excel in carcass quality. Some of the top carcass herd sires in the Angus breed originated from this herd. The bulls are developed in large lots to ensure plenty of exercise and soundness. They are performance tested for feed efficiency and really looked the part on sale day, showing lots of thickness and eye appeal. The bulls were displayed nicely at the sale facility. In order to put less stress on the bulls they were not run through the ring, but sold via closed circuit video to a large crowd of buyers on hand and thru telephone conference call.

Topping the sale was Lot 11, Summitcrest Prime Star 11W3, a 2/3/09 son of Gardens Prime Star. This bull has EPDs of BW 1.5, WW 50, Milk 23, YW 102 with a 14.5 REA and IMF of 6.31. Lowery Land & Cattle of Burwell, NE and Chase Beeby of Lebanon, NE teamed up to purchase this herd sire prospect for $9,400.
