Thorstenson Hereford Ranch from Selby, SD, is owned by Bill and Paula Thorstenson, along with their son, Darin and his wife, Danielle. This area had about 0.40-inch of rain just before the sale, and there was a touch of spring in the air as a big crowd gathered for the sale. The Thorstensons have a beautiful farmstead with a barn that was built in the ’50s.

Although the main focus of the sale is Herefords, the sale was complimented by a quality offering of Angus yearlings. All bulls were on display in pens in the middle of the yard, but the actual sale was handled via video in the sale ring. Hereford Connection, Marc and Jill Hotchkiss and Art Handel, were in charge of the video production and the management of the video during the sale.

I would have to say that I was very impressed with this set of Hereford bulls. They were long and very expressive in their thickness and muscle. The many repeat buyers on hand made for a fast-paced and strong sale.

The top-selling bull of the day in the Hereford division was Lot 0164, sired by JDF AH 25L Wrangler 13T ET out of a Wrangler bred cow. He sold for $6,500 to Larry Stroschein from Mansfield, SD. With a 106 weaning ratio, he had EPDs of BW +5.2, WW +55, YW +99, Milk +22, M&G +50, RE +0.47 and MARB +0.08.

Repeat buyer Charles Tennis from Vale, SD, selected the Lot 115 Hereford bull at $5,750. This son of THR Thor 4144 out of a daughter of JH L1 Dommo 12326 had a 92-lb. birth weight. He weaned at 694 lbs. to ratio 106. He posted EPDs of BW +4.5, WW +51, YW +89, Milk +24, M&G +50, REA +0.11, and MARB +0.09.

Gerald Booth from Timber Lake, SD, bought a good yearling bull in Lot 0340 for $5,500. With an April 18 birth date, he had a 109 weaning weight ratio.

In the Angus division, the top-selling bull was Lot 0140, a son of Lemar Freightliner 101T out of a Grid Maker daughter. He had a 94-lb. birth weight, and a weaning weight of 686 lbs. to ratio 107. He sold for $6,500 to Marlyn Thorstenson from Selby, SD.

Marlyn Thorstenson also bought Lot 0157 for $4,250. Sired by Lemar Freightliner 101T out of a daughter of Derry Dateline 792K, he had an 80-lb. birth weight before weaning at 681 lbs. to ratio 106.

Shane Grubl from Red Owl, SD, bought Lot 0107, an Angus bull, at $4,000. This son of Lemar Final Answer 67T was out of a daughter of DCC Grid Maker 477N. Born at 76 lbs., he weaned at 680 lbs. to ratio 106.

A great day for Thorstenson Hereford Ranch, and great hospitality for their customers.
