The Thorstenson family has been on this ranch for five generations, and it only continues to get stronger. Thorstenson Hereford Ranch is owned by Bill and Paula Thorstenson and their son, Darin, and his wife, Danielle. Another good crowd gathered in north central South Dakota for their annual sale out at the ranch.
This ranch has produced some of the really good Hereford cattle that have been bred in South Dakota. They produced the herd bull, THR Thor 4029 who has gone on to be a great breeding bull, and now has a vast herd of daughters that are excellent cows in this herd.
Many familiar faces were on hand for this year’s sale, as well as some new ones to compete for these top bulls and heifers.
The top selling Hereford bull was Lot 3213, selling for $10,000 to the Stroh Hereford Ranch, Killdeer, N.D. He was a son of Mac’s Rendition 20X and out of a daughter of THR Thor 4029. With an 80 pound birth weight, he weaned at 603 pounds and weighed in at 1170 pounds on sale day. He measured a scrotal of 38 cm., and had EPDs of BW 2.9, WW, 55, YW 94, MILK 19, M&G 46, REA 0.46, and MARB 0.33.
Durbin Creek Ranch, Thermopolis, Wyo., bought Lot 3060 at $9,000. This son of THR Thor 4029 was out of a Mackintosh daughter, and had an 80 pound birth weight. He weaned at 691 pounds to ratio 114.
With a final bid of $8,000, Lot 3068 also headed to Durbin Creek Ranch out in Wyoming. Here was another son of Thor 4029 who was out of a Mackintosh bred dam. This 8015 cow was a Dam of Distinction with a 107 ratio on 4 head, and a MILK EPD of 28. This Hereford bull had EPDs of BW 3.6, WW 50, YW 77, MILK 24, M&G 49, REA 0.40, and MARB 0.14.
Lot 3027 sold for $7,000 to Scott Katus, Watauga, S.D. This Hereford son of THR Thor 4029 hit the ground at 82 pounds and weaned at 673 pounds, before posting a sale day weight of 1,225 pounds.
Headlining the Angus portion of the sale was Lot 3228, selling for $8,000 to Marlin Thorstenson, Selby, S.D. This son of S Chisum 1193 was out of a LeMar Bushwacker daughter. Born at 88 pounds, he weaned at 798 pounds to ratio 139.
Lot 3303 was another low birth weight Angus bull, and he sold for $6,500. He was a son of S Game Day 035, born at 78 pounds and weaning at 649 pounds to ratio 110. His mother was a daughter of Lemar Final Answer.
Lot 3268, another son of S Game Day 035, sold for $5750 to Larry Odde, Pollock, S.D. He had a low birth weight of 73 pounds, but took off and grew to a weaning weight of 754 pounds to ratio 125.
As usual, this sale featured an outstanding set of registered Hereford yearling heifers, and many folks had come just for this portion of the sale. As you looked through the pedigrees and EPDs, you could see the strong maternal traits jump out at you. These will be great additions to the cattle ranches who took them home. The top selling Hereford heifer brought $3,200 from CML Herefords, Aberdeen, S.D. Lot 3327 was sired by THR Thor 4029.
An excellent noon lunch was served by Rick’s Café in Mobridge, S.D.
