The nation’s top rodeo stars hit Deadwood next week for the 92nd annual Days of ’76 Rodeo, July 22-26. Nearly 700 competitors will compete for more than $200,000 in prize money at this award-winning Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) event.

With history on its side – by way of 14 PRCA Rodeo of the Year honors and Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame entrance in 2011 – the Days of ’76 remains a favorite stop on the PRCA circuit. The famed Days Rodeo Grounds will be filled with the best of the best along with a packed house watching starting Tuesday, July 22.

Trevor Brazile, the multiple-time PRCA all-around champion and current top all-around cowboy in the world standings, will return to compete. Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, will compete in steer roping, and will be joined by a host of other top all-around cowboys, including fellow current PRCA world standings leaders.

The Days of ‘76 Rodeo starts at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, with PRCA steer roping, featuring all of the top 20 steer ropers in current standings. This will include current world standing leader Cody Lee, Brazile and past world champions Scott Snedecor, Buster Record, Rocky Patterson and Bryce Davis, as well as Tuf Cooper, who’s ranked 2nd in the world all-around behind Brazille. Joining them are more than 90 other steer ropers, including tri-state area ropers J.R. Olson, Ora Taton, Coy Thompson, Jesse Tierney, Paul Tierney and many other top Badlands Circuit ropers.

One of the PRCA’s best barrel men and comedy acts will be on hand in Deadwood throughout the week. Keith Isley brings his award-winning talents to the Days of ’76 again in 2014.

Slack begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 23 and will feature many top 20 PRCA cowboys in steer wrestling and tie-down roping. Steer wrestlers include Casey Martin and Nick Guy, who are both currently in the top five of the world standings.

Tie-down ropers include many NFR qualifiers, including Clint Cooper, Justin Maass and past year’s Days of ’76 Champions Dane Kissack and Jason Schaffer.Leading the team ropers are world champions Turtle Powell and Jake Barnes. All of the timed-event cowboys will compete again either in the July 23, 8 a.m. slack or the July 23, 24, 25 or 26 Days of ‘76 rodeo performances. Performances will be held nightly at 7 p.m., with a matinee performance at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 26 along with the 7 p.m. show.

Deadwood’s Days of ‘76 premiere event – saddle bronc riding – this year will feature eight of the top 20 cowboys in the world, including Camp Crook, S.D.’s Jesse Bail and Quinn, S.D.’s J.J. Elshere, who is a past NFR average winner. Joining them are fellow South Dakotans Cody Taton, from Newell, and Troy Crowser of Whitewood – who are also in the top 20 for saddle bronc riders. Other South Dakota bronc riders on the Days docket include 2013 World Champion Chad Ferley.

In bareback riding, six of the top 10 in current standings lead the list of competitors, including top 3 riders Austin Foss, Bobby Mote and Steven Peebles. Bull riders will be led by NFR qualifier Ardie Maier of Timber Lake, S.D. In barrel racing, current WPRCA points leader Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D. will lead the field.

Virtually all of the top Badlands Circuit cowboys and cowgirls are also signed on to compete in Deadwood in order to qualify for the Circuit Finals, which will be held in October in Minot, N.D.

Burch Rodeo horses and bulls, well-known throughout the area for their rankness and ability to buck, will supply the stock for the 2014 Days of ’76 rodeo’s riding events. Burch will be joined by Sutton Rodeos, Brookman-Highland Rodeo Company and Terry Walls Rodeo.
