Trask & Peterson’s 23rd Annual Angus Bull Sale

Dan Piroutek

Todd Trask and Randy Peterson combined their efforts for another great sale at Philip Livestock Auction. These two firms have been together for a long time. Their breeding philosophies are very similar and they use several of the same bulls. They raise a cow herd that can flourish in a South Dakota environment and still gain well in the feedlot, plus the cattle have outstanding carcasses.

Much of the enthusiasm in the sale was centered around the reference sire, Connealy 044 062. He has incredible EPD numbers, including the honor of holding the #1 weaning weight EPD in the Angus breed. His EPD numbers are +11 CED, -0.5 BW, +91 WW, +141 YW and +1.47 SC.

The weather was sunny on sale day, and a good crowd was on hand to receive this good set of bulls.

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 1, a son of Connealy 044 062 who was out of a daughter of GAR New Design 5050. This bull drew a lot of pre-sale attention as he was a very long-bodied bull with a big top and rear end. Greeting the world at 80 pounds, he weaned at 724 pounds to ratio 111 and grew to a yearling weight of 1,310 pounds to ratio 117. Other stats were a 14.6 sq. in. rib eye and a $B score of +53.03. His EPDs were +0.8 BW, +70 WW, +21 MILK and +125 YW. He sold as a new herd bull for $8,750 to Wayne Wilde of Shevlin, MN.

Lot 41, a son of GAR New Design 5050 and out of a daughter of Larks Canyon 74D4, sold for $6,000 to Mark Glasser of Spaulding, NE. This bull had an 88 pound birth weight, a weaning weight of 816 pounds, and a yearling weight of 1,390 pounds. A 39 cm. scrotal measurement and an impressive rib eye of 17.3 sq. in. added to his desirability. His EPDs were +1.5 BW, +59 WW, +30 MILK and +109 YW.

Philip Englebrecht from Buffalo Gap, SD chose Lot 36 at $5,250. This son of GAR New Design 5050 was out of a Larks Canyon daughter, and had EPDs of +0.4 BW, +59 WW, +26 MILK and +105 YW. With an 82 pound birth weight, he weaned at 782 pounds.

Lot 7 sold for $4,750 to Chad Whitney from Murdo, SD. Another son of Connealy 044 062, he was out of a New Design 5050 daughter. His EPDs included +0.1 BW, +66 WW, +21 MILK and +116 YW.

The Martin Angus Ranch from Wray, CO selected Lot 12 at $4,400. He was by Connealy 044 062 with EPDs of +0.8 BW, +68 WW, +17 MILK, and +114 YW.

It was a beautiful day, and a nice bull sale in the cattlemen’s country of western South Dakota.
