‘Turn N Burn For The Cure’ barrel racing events benefit Relay For Life
The 4th annual Relay For Life “Turn N’ Burn For The Cure” barrel race is scheduled for Sept. 17-18, 2011, at the Yuma County Fairgrounds in Yuma, CO.
To begin the weekend event, exhibition barrel runs will take place from 2-5 p.m. on Sept. 17, for $5 each. At 6 p.m. the open 4D barrel race will begin (half-second splits, 5D if 150-plus entries) with the youth 3D barrel race (whole-second splits) to follow. Entries open at 1:30 p.m.
On Sept. 18, Cowboy church will begin at 8 a.m. in the main grandstands. At 9:30 a.m. the open barrel race will start followed by the youth race, and new this year, the open final round and jackpot pole bending (in place of the bikini race). Entries open at 8:30 a.m.
This year is a first for a final round in the open barrel race. The top 10 average time contestants from Saturday and Sunday in each division will run at the conclusion of the youth race on Sunday for custom DC Designs buckles! Adding to the excitement will be a Cowgirl Tuff Lucky Drag. Contestants should be sure to wear their Cowgirl Tuff apparel while they compete in barrel races throughout the weekend, as it could result in free Cowgirl Tuff clothing! After the final round there will be an open jackpot pole bending.
All entry fees for the weekend are cash only and are: open barrel races, $35; youth barrel races, $15; and jackpot pole bending, $15. Office charges are $10 per day or $15 for the weekend per rider. All races are 75 percent payback. There is $500 added to each open race! All open races are Better Barrel Races (BBR) and WPRA approved!
The Triple Sprint team race and auction is still an annual event. It coincides with the open races for $30 a team and the youth races for $15 a team. Contestants must run both days to win the awards. The top 10 teams in the open and the top 5 teams in the youth will receive awards all valued at more than the entry fees. There is also a target time saddle for the open barrel race contestants to compete for. The fee to take a chance on winning this beautiful saddle is $10 per horse.
The Triple Sprint team auction will be on Sept. 17 before the open begins. The auction will begin approximately 5:30 p.m. Pole benders will also be auctioned off. Spectators are an important aspect of the auction, as top bidders receive awards, too. All proceeds generated from these events, as well as net proceeds after expenses from the weekend, will be donated to the Relay For Life.
Delicious concessions will be provided both days by the YHS cheerleaders, with part of the proceeds going towards the Relay For Life organization.
Organizers hope the 4th annual Relay For Life “Turn N’ Burn For The Cure” event will be bigger and better than ever. Sponsors have contributed generously to make the event a success. All spectators are welcome. There is no charge to come watch and support a great cause. Contestants, remember, entries are cash only, and winnings will be paid in cash.
