USDA Under Secretary Edward Avalos speaks at South Dakota Cattlemen’s convention

PIERRE, SD – Edward Avalos, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), will be the featured lunch speaker at the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association (SDCA) annual convention on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010.

SDCA’s President, Bryan Nagel, said, “SDCA has serious apprehensions about a pending livestock marketing rule proposed by USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA). We’re appreciative of Mr. Avalos’ efforts to come to South Dakota and listen to our members’ concerns.”

In his position as USDA’s Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, Mr. Avalos provides leadership and oversight for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), and GIPSA. Mr. Avalos has over 30 years of experience in livestock and agriculture marketing in both domestic and international arenas. He has spent considerable time working closely with producers to address industry demands.
