UW Extension hosts Management- Intensive Grazing School near Glenrock
A four-day school to coax more out of pastures, extend grazing seasons and reduce or eliminate the need for harvested feed is being sponsored in Glenrock, Wyo. by the University of Wyoming Extension.
The Management-intensive Grazing School is June 2-5 at the Duncan Ranch near Glenrock, Wyo. Each day consists of classroom work in the morning followed by hands-on applications of concepts on the ranch.
Participants will learn how to design and implement a management-intensive grazing program focused on profitability and pasture production.
Author Jim Gerrish, who operates a grazing operation near May, Idaho, and is a contributing writer for the Stockman Grass Farmer, will lead the school, said Dallas Mount, extension educator in Wheatland, Wyo.
“The difference between high-profit and low-profit cow-calf operations can usually come down to the amount of harvested feed the operation uses. This school teaches a way to reduce the cost of harvesting and feeding and improve pasture productivity,” said Mount. “I’m very excited Jim Gerrish will be coming back to Wyoming to lead this school. There is no one with more practical experience and knowledge about management-intensive grazing than Jim.”
This is the third such school in Wyoming. The first two near Wheatland had great results, said Mount. Cost of the school is $300 per person or $500 for two from the same operation. The fee includes all noon meals and materials.
“The schools have averaged 30 participants, and they have come from five different states to participate,” said Mount. “All the participants reported the school was well worth their investment of time and money to attend.”
Other sponsors are Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, Wyoming Private Grazing Lands Team, Jonah Bank and Converse County Bank.
