The Valnes Ranch is home to some outstanding Red Angus cattle and performance quarter horses. A nice crowd gathered on a chilly spring day out on the ranch near Eden, S.D., just west of Sisseton, S.D.
Since this was the first time I had been to this ranch, I would have to say that I was impressed with this good herd of Red Angus cattle. This is a beautiful grass ranch, tucked away in the northeast corner of South Dakota.
These cattle are expected to perform on roughage as 90 percent of the bulls in the offering have low maintenance EPDs.
This was the first year that the auction was held at the ranch, so people could see the cow herd and this good herd of quarter horses.
The Valnes’ provided genetics from the blood lines of Cash 2R, Red Towaw Indeed 104H, Lazy MC Smash 41N, Mulberry 26P, Rustler 62P, Beckton Epic 397 K, and LSF JBOB Expectation, as well as from several home-raised sires, including VRRA Classic Indeed X33. I thought the top end of these bulls were as good as you see.
Top selling bull of the day was Lot 15, selling for $7,500 to Klompien Red Angus, Manhattan, Mont. This son of Red Corner Creek Cash 2R was out of a daughter of DKK Grand Day R39 who had an outstanding MPPA of 117.1. This bull had weaned at 624 lb. and had a scrotal measurement of 39.7 cm. He posted EPDs of BW 0.9, WW 65, YW 89, MILK 17, ME -4, HPG 9, CEM -1, STAY 8 and REA 0.40.
Texas rancher, Grant Appleton bought several of the top bulls, including Lot 2 at $6,000, Lot 1 at $5,750, Lot 5 at $5,500, and Lot 9 at $5,000. The Lot 2 bull was a son of Red Corner Creek Cash 2R and out of a daughter of Red Flying K Cherokee, 61M. Born at 84 lb., he weaned at 611 lb. and gained 3.4 lb. a day. He had a scrotal measurement of 40.7 cm.
Lot 1 was a son of the home raised bull, VRRA Classic Indeed and out of a daughter of VRRA Power House Plus. He had EPDs of BW -0.7, WW 53, YW 78, MILK 18, STAY 12, MARB 0.23.
Lot 5 was a son of Red Corner Creek Cash 2R, with a weaning weight of 656 lb. to ratio 109. Grant also liked the Lot 9 bull, a son of Cash2R. He was out of a Cherokee Canyon 4912 daughter. This bull had weaned at 670 lb. and posted a yearling weight of 1227 lb.
The top selling open yearling Red Angus heifer sold for $2800 to Charlie Jaure, Shoshoni, Wyo.
The Valnes Ranch also offers a good selection of quarter horses for sale by private treaty. They are pictured on their website at http://www.valnesranch.com. Their featured sire is PC Lone Paywood, going back to Sun Frost, and Doc Bar. Give them a call if you are interested in horses.
