Virginia adopts ag-endorsed animal care standards

Virginia’s first animal care standards specifically for livestock, horses, poultry and other agricultural animals has been overwhelmingly approved by both houses of the General Assembly. The legislation adopted a proposal by the Virginia Farm Bureau (VFB) and other farm groups to enact a “reasonable standard for agricultural animal care,” rather than leaving it to “those unfamiliar with animal husbandry practices.”

The new law requires food to prevent malnutrition, water to prevent dehydration and veterinary treatment or humane destruction when needed in order “to ensure that proper exemptions exist to protect routine husbandry practices,” the VFB said. Despite a last-minute campaign by the Humane Society of the U.S. and other activist groups, both the Senate and the House of Delegates passed bills by lopsided votes.
