Average: 39 Angus Bulls – $3,143
A nice crowd gathered for the Wedge Tent Ranch sale the last Wednesday in April at Lemmon Livestock. Wedge Tent Ranch is owned by Bart and Shannon Carmichael and their four children. Their ranch is located just off Hwy 73 between Faith and Lemmon.
This herd has focused their breeding program around low input cattle – cattle that can manage themselves on a forage-based diet. Bart wants to have cows that are moderate framed with a lot of capacity. This incorporates the idea that the cattle can graze most of the year without extra feed. This year they added a set of two-year-old bulls to the sale. These bulls were moderately fleshed, but very sound, and ready for heavy service.
Top selling bull of the day was a May two-year-old bull, lot 43, selling for $7,000 and headed home with Mark Zeisler, Butte, NE. This bull was born at 80 pounds, sired by MCC Mule Creek 805, and out of a daughter of OCC Anchor 771A. His mother had a weaning weight ratio of 110 on 8 calves. This bull had a weaning weight ratio of 108 and a yearling weight ratio of 109. His EPDs were BW 2.3, WW 32, and YW 52.
Lot 6 was purchased by Jon Zeisler, Butte, NE, for $4,750. This was a yearling heifer bull with a 70 pound birth weight and a weaning weight ratio of 105. He was sired by OCC Missing Link 830M and out of a daughter of JAD Michael M913.
Lots 16 and 18 were a pair of yearling bulls, and each sold for $4,500. These bulls were to become part of the Zeisler herd at Butte, NE. Lot 16 was another heifer bull with a 71 pound birth weight. He was sired by OCC Prototype 847P and out of a daughter of MH Wylie 55. Lot 18 was born at 78 pounds, and this was another yearling bull considered to offer calving ease. He was sired by N Bar Prime Time D806 and out of a daughter of JJN Stockman 8039. He had a weaning weight ratio of 112.
Another outstanding May two-year-old bull was lot 54 at $4,250. This bull was born at 82 pounds and weaned at 640 pounds. His EPDs were BW 0.4, WW 35, YW 63, and MILK 16. He was sired by OCC Paxton 730P and out of a daughter of MH Knockout 101. He headed to Holsing Farms, Wecota, SD.
Keith Butrum, Veblen, SD, selected another popular two-year-old, with his purchase of lot 44. He was sired by MCC Mule Creek 805 and out of a daughter of OCC New Life 904N. Born at 76 pounds, he posted EPDs of BW 0.3, WW 42, YW 69, and MILK 14.
This area has been very dry and Bart and Shannon were very thankful to their loyal customers for making this a very good sale.
