Welcoming in Miss Rodeo SD 2009

Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2009
Courtney Smith |

Happy New Year everyone! My name is Courtney Smith and this next year I will have the honor of representing rodeo in South Dakota as Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2009. I am the 22-year-old daughter of Tom and Deanna Smith of Rapid City. I recently graduated from South Dakota State University with a major in Mass Communication and a minor in Business. My official pageant sponsors were my grandparents, Odie and Catherine West of Pierre, SD. On my way to winning the title of Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2009, I also won the categories of horsemanship, speech, appearance, personality, and the written test award. I am very excited to be representing South Dakota’s official sport of rodeo.

My year as Miss Rodeo South Dakota will kick off at my official Coronation celebration, in which you are all invited. The Coronation celebration will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 and will take place at Stagestop Receptions in Black Hawk, SD, which is located off of I-90 Exit 48. The social hour and silent auction will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a beef buffet dinner at 6 p.m. The dinner will cost $25 per ticket, and 12-and-under will cost $12. Special thanks to the South Dakota Beefman and the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association for providing the beef and Country Hearth Breads of Rapid City for providing the bread for the buffet dinner. All proceeds from the dinner and benefit auction will help me as I travel the country and South Dakota promoting rodeo, our official state sport. Please make reservations for the dinner by calling 605-390-4728 or emailing mrsd2009@hotmail.com.

Coronation will take place at 7 p.m., where Tara Trask, Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2008, will honor me with the traveling crown and other awards. Following the coronation the live auction will begin.

The silent auction and live auction will highlight some of South Dakota’s best, with items donated from across the state; including a quilt made by Lesa Stevens of Wall, pheasant hunting and deer archery hunting packages donated by the West Family of Sully County, a cow-calf bronze donated by the Madison Ranch of Rapid City, a limited edition Mick Harrison print titled “Horse Royal Flush” donated by the Black Hills Stock Show Foundation, a bison trimmed men’s vest donated by Rocking R Bison Leather, a Cripple Creek western leather jacket, rustic antler candelabras donated by West Quarter Horse Ranch, a Crazy Horse Monument trip, western leather belts and a Professional Choice rope from Triple R Tack of Rapid City and much, much more.

Check out a complete listing of the auction items on my blog at http://mrsd2009.blogspot.com. If for some reason you cannot join me for some great South Dakota beef at my coronation, please feel free to email your bids on items that you may be interested in, as I will accept sealed bids on items if sent by Jan. 9th to mrsd2009@hotmail.com or by phone to 605-390-4728.

After my coronation I will hit the ground running hard by attending the National Western Stock Show and the Denver Market. Then I will spend some quality time in my hometown at the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo in Rapid City, SD. I hope to see you somewhere along my rodeo trail!
