MITCHELL, SD – The FFA chapter from Wolsey-Wessington High School (SD) captured the second annual ‘Team up to Safety’ farm safety quiz bowl competition finals championship during the DakotaFest Farm Show in Mitchell on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Wolsey-Wessington defeated the FFA chapter from Tri-Valley 180-120 to earn the top honors. During the quiz bowl competition participants answer questions related safety, health and emergencies on the farm or ranch. The quiz bowl is sponsored by South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU).

“We hope these students will take away some valuable farm and ranch safety knowledge that they can put into practice when they’re on the farm,” said SDFU Rural Development Director Mitch Fargen. “The quiz bowl is a fun way to pass on tips and best practices that could save someone’s life someday.”

Wolsey-Wessington was one of the top four scoring teams during the first round of the quiz bowl competition held this past April at the state FFA convention held on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings that advanced to the semifinals at DakotaFest. Wolsey-Wessington defeated the FFA chapter from McCook Central High School to advance to the final round. Tri-Valley advanced to the championship round by beating the FFA chapter from Clark High School in the semifinals.

Judges for the event were South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke and Farm Service Agency State Director Craig Schaunaman.
