Wyoming House defeats state beef checkoff bill
The Wyoming House has defeated, 49-8, legislation that would have assessed state cattle producers an additional $1 per head to fund state education and promotion programs.
The bill was backed by the Wyoming Beef Council and the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. But the Associated Press reported that, “Lawmakers said most rank-and-file cattle producers in Wyoming opposed the legislation and said it amounted to an unneeded tax.”
The bill would have authorized a producer referendum on whether to create a state checkoff system authorized to raise money for education and promotion efforts in Wyoming. That fee would have been on top of the $1 per head national checkoff.
