Wyoming: Mountain States Beef Expo showcases livestock

The 10th annual Mountain States Beef Expo in Riverton Saturday and Sunday, April 30-May 1, is moving to new digs this year.

The expo, which has been at the Central Wyoming College Equine Center, will be held at the Fremont County Fairgrounds, said Alex Malcolm, University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service 4-H educator in Fremont County.

The event, usually held in March, was moved due to the shortened spring break at the college.

“Having it at Central Wyoming College allowed this event to grow bigger and more popular each year. The facility there is awesome,” said Malcolm. “Moving it to the fairgrounds will enhance the experience for those coming. And, we should have better weather for traveling.”

The steer and heifer show is for ages 8 through 19 the day of the show. The show averages 150 exhibitors who come from as far away as Nebraska, Montana and Colorado.

“The quality of livestock that will be here rivals any beef show in the Rocky Mountain Region. You won’t see any better,” said Malcolm. “This is where you will see the champions of this year’s county and state fair beef shows.”

The show provides exhibitors an opportunity to work with their cattle, show off their cattle’s genetics and have a good time meeting other people from across the Western states, he said.

Each day, the grand champion steer will be awarded $1,000, the reserve champion steer $500, the grand champion heifer $500 and the reserve champion heifer $250.

Events start with cattle weigh-in and hip height at 8 a.m. the first day and at 7 a.m. the second day. An entry fee of $30 per head will be taken during check-in.

“The Fremont County Fairgrounds have been very good to work with,” said Kent Haun, a Mountain States Beef Expo board member. “They have new wash racks, better stalling and more parking. Also, we want people to get their rooms reserved early. It is going to be a good show. People are coming to this show to see how they stack up against better competition.”
