Dewey Lowell Trent: 1927-2012
Dewey Lowell Trent, Oelrichs, SD, went to live with his Heavenly Father on Dec. 28, 2012, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He had been a resident of Hospice of the Hills, since Feb. 8, 2012, where he quickly won the hearts of those who served him with his quick wit, sparkling eyes and infectious smile.
The third child of Harry Gilbert and Lucy Alvina (Wellner) Trent, Dewey was born Sept. 2, 1927, at Oelrichs, SD. He attended school at the Lennon and Oelrichs Schools graduating from Oelrichs High School in 1945. Dewey married Mytle LeLaCheur on March 25, 1950. Into this union, three sons were born, Melvin in 1951 and twins Ronald and Donald in 1953.
Dewey lived his entire life in the Fall River County in the Smithwick and Oelrichs area. He first worked farming for Clifford and William Gieser, and began working for the Lorenz Brothers in heavy machinery construction in 1950. He helped build a lot of stock dams in the county that are still being used to water livestock, including many in the Hay Canyon area. During this period of time he also farmed and ranched and continued to do so after moving the family to Oelrichs in 1962 when he took over the job of Standard Oil Agent. Dewey and Myrtle purchased the business from Standard Oil in 1976 and continued to serve their many customers in the counties of Fall River, Custer and Shannon until the business closed Dec. 31, 2011.
Trent Oil Company supported the Fall River County 4-H program having been a buyer at the 4-H livestock sale for 25 years. The Trent Family were recipients of the Farm Bureau Century Farm award in 2000 and in 2012 were recognized by the Hot Springs Area Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee as Ag Family of the Year. Dewey was a lifelong member of B.P.O.E., SD Cattlemen’s and Stockgrowers Organizations. He served on the Smithwick School Board and was a board member for Southern Hills General Hospital from 1971-1998. Dewey was a long-time member of the Oelrichs Volunteer Fire Department, serving 25 years as treasurer; a member of the Oelrichs United Methodist Church and most recently the Prairie View United Methodist Church. Dewey believed in treating people fairly and expected no less in return. His kindness and wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at the Prairie View United Methodist Church west of Smithwick, SD.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Church with Pastor Paul Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Hillside Cemetery, near Oelrichs.
