Julia Jeannette Kinghorn 1929 – 2012

Julia Jeannette Kinghorn, 82, of St. Onge, SD, passed away Thursday, Aug. 2, at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spearfish, SD. Memorials will be given to St. Onge Community Club, St. Onge Cemetery Fund and Society of Black Hills Pioneers Scholarship fund.

Julia was born Dec. 7, 1929, to William Nicholas and Jeannette Alice (Larive) Kerwin in Deadwood, SD. She grew up on the Kerwin Ranch on Spring Creek near Spearfish, SD. She attended country school starting at five years of age so she could have a classmate. In 1946, Julia graduated from Spearfish High School, as did all of her children.

She married James Alan Kinghorn on June 25, 1947, and lived the rest of her life on their ranch two miles south of St. Onge, SD. To this union, seven children were born; they also cared for one foster child, nieces, nephews and other children who wanted to share the ranch experience. Julia worked various jobs throughout her life including cooking at the St. Onge Sale Barn, Rancher Bar and Café and helping at Cora’s Creations Flower Shop. She raised chickens and sold eggs and fryers to her many customers. She was known as “the egg lady”.

She was known for her cooking talents, especially her raised donuts, cinnamon rolls, pickles, and relish which she enjoyed making and sharing with others. Her life was very busy because of her compassion and service to her family, neighbors, Alan’s Aunt Sarah, her St. Onge Community and many organizations. She served on the Butte-Lawrence County Fair Board and as secretary of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers. She was a member of St. Onge Community Club, St. Onge Garden Club and Extension Club, as well as a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spearfish, SD. She also enjoyed delivering daffodils for the American Cancer Society.

Julia, Alan and family rode for 24 years in the Days of ‘76 parade as a pioneer family. Julia rode for a total of 57 years in that parade and served as parade marshal in 2009. Alan and Julia loved to camp at “The Days” with their family and ‘the extras’ that came along. They were also honored at the Butte-Lawrence County Fair and Julia was honored when she retired from that board.

Julia is survived by her seven children; Judy (Dave) Brewer, Anderson, MO; Chris (Jim) Maupin, Hulett, WY; Bill (Teri) Kinghorn, Rapid City, SD; Peggy (Dewey) Turbiville, Sundance, WY; Mary Jo Kinghorn, Scottsdale, AZ; Ray (Sheila) Kinghorn, St. Onge, SD; Jim (Carol) Kinghorn, Shenandoah, IA; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Iola Langley, Spearfish, SD and sister-in-law Cora Verhulst, Spearfish, SD, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alan, brother Martin Kerwin and great grandson Dalton Brewer.
