Lorin “Bud” Cathpole 1922 – 2012

The Funeral Service for Lorin “Bud” Cathpole, age 90, of Lemmon, was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon with Pastor Bob Edwards, officiating. Burial was at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Special music was provided by Marilyn Willey. Serving as casketbearers were Jeff Mortenson, Terry Alexander, Roger Warbis, Bob Catchpole, and Robert Warbis.

Lorin “Bud” Robert Catchpole was born on a farm near Eckley, CO on Jan. 25, 1922 to Charley and Emma (Metzger) Catchpole. He was the youngest of five children and went to high school at Fort Morgan and Fort Collins, CO. He went into the Colorado National Guard and transferred into Federal service after Pearl Harbor. Bud served in WWII in the Philippines and New Guinea and was on Northern Luzon when the bomb was dropped on Japan.

After the service, he was discharged from the army and enrolled at the Agriculture College in Fort Collins. In May of 1946, he married Cleo Marion Thoen at the American Lutheran Church in Fort Collins. They had their first child Milda Pauline Catchpole in March 1947, and then Lorin transferred to the University of Wyoming and completed his degree in Animal Husbandry with a certificate to teach Vocational Agriculture. Robert Thoen Catchpole was born in February of 1950 and the family moved to Buffalo, SD where Lorin taught. They then had Margaret Elisa Catchpole in October of 1953, Meda Ruth Catchpole was born June of 1957 and Cecelia Lenore Catchpole was born August of 1963. They moved to Lemmon, SD where Lorin taught until he retired in 1987. During his teaching career, he received multiple awards from the FFA from National, State, and local Chapters. He was a member of the South Dakota Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association and is a member of the Hall of Fame. In 1988, Lorin and Cleo went to Papua New Guinea and both taught at the Seasee High School, under the sponsorship of the Lutheran Church.

Lorin passed away on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, SD.

Surviving family members include his wife, Cleo; Lemmon, SD; his daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and Jeff Mortenson, Murrell’s Inlet, SC and their three children, Anna Froiland, Erika Thompson, and Amanda Mortenson; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sharon Catchpole Wheatland, WY and their children, Jennifer Weber, Charles Catchpole, and Marcus Catchpole; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Terry Alexander, Denver, CO and their children, Breanna Alexander and Keith Alexander; his daughter and son-in-law, Meda and Roger Warbis, Upton, WY and their children, Robert Warbis and Joe Warbis; and son-in-law, Steve Feierabend, (Cecelia “Charley”) Denver, CO and their children, Emma, William, Lauren, and Sonja; and one sister, Margaret Pitman, Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, and youngest daughter Charley “Cecelia”.
