Banamine warning, rodeos, fairs, clinics, ranch rodeos
I’m sure glad the heat let up for a few days. I was about to run out of sweat! The last playday of the season for my little grandboys was during that heat and we all about melted, but we had fun! I’m sure proud of how they’ve progressed with their riding and I’m also proud of those two mares they’re riding. Both did a great job for their little cowboys.
If you haven’t seen it, be sure to look it up. The recent Horse Roundup that came out in last week’s TSLN was great, and in it was a very good article, “Avoiding Clostridial Myositis” about administering Banamine (flunixin meglumine) to horses in the muscle. The drug is often used to treat the pain of colic and was labeled for both intramuscular (IM) and intravenous (IV) use for many years. However, the IM shots can set a horse up for a clostridial infection that can cause a great deal of damage and potentially death. From here on out I am going to administer that drug only in an IV or in the mouth. Whether you use the brand name Banamine or a generic, the results can be just as disastrous.
