Outside Circle by Jan Swan Wood: Good ropers, Wyoming brand renewal, barrels, ranch rodeos, broncs and Phillips memorial
We finally got some much needed rain! Thankfully, we got the rain without the wicked storms that hit some of the region. Tornado damage in Baker, Montana and Hermosa, South Dakota and some livestock lost are what I’m hearing about. I sure feel for everyone in those areas.
Our heifers finally started calving and we are nearly done for the year with one old cow and three heifers left. So far the heifers have done the job unassisted, which is just dandy with me. Since we didn’t start until nearly the first of May, we’re doing okay, especially since the heifer deal was a wreck last year and we had to turn them with a different bull the end of August. I’m not worried about them catching up for next year.
I sure liked this news story I saw on the internet. At Eagle Point, Oregon, a guy stole a woman’s bicycle and was making a getaway from the Walmart parking lot. A cowboy, Robert Borba, was in his pickup with his horse in the trailer. He saw what happened, unloaded his horse and went after the guy. He roped him slick and dragged him back across the parking lot and held him while they waited for the cops to arrive. I hope he gets a medal for that!
My favorite PRCA calf roper, Dane Kissack, Spearfish, S.D. teamed up with his good mare Lizzie and won the Livermore, California tie down roping. That’s a pretty good way to start his summer rodeo run! I’ve known Dane for years and he’s one of those really good guys that I’m always happy to brag on.
The Wyoming Brand Board has announced that renewals will begin in October for certain brands. If your brand certificate number ends in -7, your are in this renewal period. There will be a memorial service July 7 for Gary and Fielding Phillips. It will be at the Cadillac Ranch, Belle Fourche, South Dakota, at 4 p.m. There will be a dinner and dancing following the service. Gary passed away December 10, ‘15 and Fielding on February 20, ‘16. They were a pair of wonderful men and this sounds like just their sort of service.
That winds up my circle for this week. I hope you’re getting some rain where you are and the summer is looking a bit more promising. Have a good week!
