Outside Circle by Jan Swan Wood: Junior Bachand memorial, bull riding, free roughstock clinic, rodeo series, ranch rodeos
May 11, 2016
It's sure been a windy week here on Dry Creek. We got a little dab of rain and about three feet of wind so it's not exactly muddy. There's another front moving in, according to the weather guy, and hopefully that will bring some more moisture. Our grass is really coming on but an inch or so of rain would be just dandy.
First of all, I promised to let you know when the memorial service for Junior Bachand would be, so write this down. It will be June 18, 1-5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Sturgis, S.D. Junior was raised east of Sturgis, had resided in Arizona for years, but his heart was always here in western South Dakota.
The Fling V Buckin' At the Barn bull riding will be Saturday, May 21, 7 p.m. at the salebarn in Presho, S.D. It's part of the LJ Jenkins Bull Riding tour and is ABBI and MBBI sanctioned.
The Sturgis Youth Rodeo series has started. The next one will be May 26, then May 31, June 30, July 14 and the rain makeup date is August 14. You can pre-enter by calling Annie at 605-280-0529. Entries close at 5:45 and no late entries will be taken. Exhibitions are 5 to 5:45 p.m. with the events starting at 6.
Bares, Bronc, Bulls and Bibles roughstock rodeo clinic will be May 30-31, at Dupree Rodeo Grounds, Dupree, S.D. Registration is at 9 a.m., and they invite cowboys ages 14-19. There's no charge for the clinic. Practice will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a practice rodeo from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a time of sharing the Word after. Parents must sign a waiver for their young 'uns to participate, and that can be found on Facebook. Otherwise, call Cole Elshere at 605-739-3018 or 605-200-1329.
The Custer County Calf Roping at Broken Bow, Neb. will be June 11. Divisions are 50+ and over, 17 and under, open tie down roping, all girl breakaway (WPRA approved), and open breakaway. You need to send a deposit by June 1 to hold your spot, so call Cole Tierney at 817-304-7423 for that, or for general information, call Patrick Martin at 308-880-0191.

Don't forget all the great high school rodeos going on around the region. Those high school kids are working hard at their events and the amount of "try" shown at those rodeos is wonderful. Take a drive and take one in, you sure won't be sorry. It will give you hope for the future!
Be sure and send me your events info and any fundraisers that you know of. I'm always glad to share them here. That's my circle for the week, so take care and God bless you!
