Outside Circle by Jan Swan Wood: NSRA Museum and gathering, Lisa and Riley, high dollar bronc, horse sale at Gordon
Winter is certainly upon us. What I find amazing is that Christmas is here. I don’t know where time goes anymore, but it flies by faster and faster every year. My dear uncle told me it would go faster the older I got and those were sure prophetic words!
This a heads up for anyone who has rodeoed in the Nebraska State Rodeo Association over the years. The Front Street Steakhouse in Ogallala, Neb. is expanding their existing Old West Museum to include NSRA cowboys and cowgirls. There will be a Back Of The Chutes party in the Crystal Palace Saloon there on Tuesday, Dec. 27, with a happy hour at 5 p.m., cash bar, and the steakhouse will be open. You can mingle and visit with old friends and enjoy the guest speakers for the evening and everyone is welcome. To RSVP call Barb Barent at 308-284-3953 or Joen Feusner at 832-298-9672.
The WNFR is over and everyone is home and back to their usual routines. I was so darned tickled with how well Lisa Lockhart and her great Louie did! They won the average for the second time and always make us all so proud to have them representing our state. Lisa is always the epitome of class and niceness and is such a great role model for young and old alike. Lisa and Louie are from Oelrichs, S.D.
Also doing very well at the finals and in an event we don’t usually have many in from the northern plains, Riley Pruitt, Gering, Neb. won the aggregate in the tie down roping at the finals. He’s a super young roper and it sure busts my buttons to have him doing so well. Tie down roping (aka calf roping) is usually pretty well dominated by the ropers from Texas and Oklahoma, but Riley has been pushing them for a long time and this was a pretty good finals for him. Hope he makes it back for many more.
The World Famous Benny Binion Bucking Horse Sale and Stace Smith futurity in Las Vegas had quite a sale! One particular horse caught my interest though. The second high selling bronc was a Bucking Horse Breeders Association registered bronc named Full Throttle, consigned by Headings/Kling of Watford City, N.D. The fabulous bronc had the equally fine bronc rider Taygen Schuelke, Newell, S.D. on him and he brought $36,000! I’ve been watching that young man since he started riding calves as a little feller at Newell Labor Day, so seeing him help a top bronc bring that kind of money made me feel good all over!
There will be an open horse sale at Gordon Livestock Market, Gordon, Neb. on December 20 at 2 p.m. For more info, call Link Thompson at 308-282-9998 or Dick Minor, Jr. at 308-360-0427.
The 40th Annual Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo will be in Rapid City, S.D. Jan. 27-Feb. 4, but leading up to that great event will be many more really great events! There will be the World Series of Team Roping Jan. 13-15; SDCHA show Jan. 18-20; NRCHA All Around Show Jan. 21-23, then the NRCHA Winter Spectacular show Jan. 23-25; Winter Classic AQHA Show Jan. 21-24 and 22-26; and the Best of the West Roping Futurity Jan. 22-24. All of these events will be held at the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds.
Right on the heels of the BHSS will be the Twisted Sisters Barrel Race at the Event Center on Feb. 4, with open and youth jackpots. The exhibitions will start at 9 a.m. and the open 4D jackpot will start right after that and not before 12:30 p.m. The youth 3D will follow that. Call Stacey Thar at 307-660-8466 or go to the website at http://www.TharRanchProductions.com.
Well, that about winds my column up for another week.
I hope you have a very blessed Christmas. The commemoration of the arrival of our Savior, Jesus Christ, as an innocent baby, is what it’s all about. May you let that be the focus of your Christmas. May God richly bless all of you.
