Outside Circle by Jan Swan Wood: Ranch roping results, Lisa wins ERA, Bull riders only, family jackpot, team ropings
By the time you read this another Thanksgiving is in the books. I hope yours was a truly thankful time and that you got to spend it with people you care about.
The Roping On The River ranch roping was a success. Winning the open was the team of Scott Walters, Keldron, S.D., Travis Casteel, Vale, S.D. and Dave Long, Pierre, S.D. The draw was won by Troy Nickel, Blunt, S.D., Scott Walters, and Roy Lemmon, Eagle Butte, S.D. The novice was won by Jenn Zeller, Zach Ducheneaux and Jesse Clement all of Ridgeview, S.D. Congrats to all the winners. I hope this is the first of many ranch ropings held in our region. Many thanks to Dave Long for putting it on!
At the first ever E.R.A. world championship rodeo, Lisa Lockhart, Oelrichs, S.D. won the barrels and the championship. Good job, Lisa!
There will be an open horse sale on Nov. 30, 1 p.m., at Rushville, Neb. There are some special consignments for the sale including a dandy, speed bred set of broodmares and some really solid ranch geldings. You can call the salebarn at 308-327-2406.
The 2nd Annual Slick Phelps Bull Riders Only Challenge will be Friday, Dec. 16, 3 p.m., at the James Kjerstad Event Center, Rapid City, S.D. For the open bull riding, they’re taking 40 bull riders and will have a long and short go; for the junior bulls (ages 10-15) they’ll take 12 bull riders and have a long and short go. There will be a New Year’s Family Jackpot on Dec. 31 at the South Campbell County Ag Complex, Wright, Wyo. They’ll have NWBRA open barrels, youth barrels, poles, breakaway, steer roping and a draw pot team roping. You can wear your ugliest sweat and bring a potluck dish and enjoy the day! Signup starts at 7:30 a.m., exhibition barrels at 9:30, and the event starts at noon. Call Janie at 605-210-3179 for info.
Also on New Year’s, Stop The Clock Productions and Hideout Arena are putting on a #4-#9 team roping, plus and 16 and under mix, and a 4D barrel race. This will be at Watford City, N.D. on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 and there will be two high dollar saddles awarded. There will be an equine muscle conditioning school with Rex Blackwell on Jan. 2-6 at Buffalo, S.D. He’ll teach how to relieve muscle pain and also coach students on how to build a business.
