Klobuchar formally announces bid for Minnesota governor
Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., the ranking member on the Senate Agriculture Committee, formally announced today that she is running for governor of Minnesota in a 4-minute video released on X. “I like my job in the Senate,” Klobuchar said in her announcement video. “But I love our state more than any job,” The New York Times noted.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, has announced he will not run for re-election.In a message used on several fundraising sites, Klobuchar said, “I’m not going to sugarcoat it — Minnesota has been through a lot.”
“The killings of two innocent Minnesotans. 3,000 ICE agents on our streets and in our towns, sent by an administration that relishes division. Minnesotans stood up. Our state has been the center of America’s heartbreak.
“But we have also been the center of America’s courage and America’s hope. In moments of enormous difficulty, we find strength in our Minnesota values of hard work, freedom, and simple decency and good will.
“I believe we must stand up for what’s right. And fix what’s wrong. I am running for every Minnesotan who wants to buy their first home, for every parent who wants a better world for their kids, for everyone who wants more affordable health care. I am running for every Minnesotan who wants to protect our democracy and get ICE and its abusive tactics out of the state we love,” Klobuchar said.
“No other major Democrats have gotten into the race following Walz’s decision to not seek re-election,” NBC News reported. “State Attorney General Keith Ellison said earlier in January that he wouldn’t run — and Klobuchar’s profile is likely to keep the field clear for her.”
“Republicans are already staring down a crowded gubernatorial primary,” NBC News said.
NBC said the group running includes Scott Jensen, the former state senator whom Walz defeated in 2022; MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell; state House Speaker Lisa Demuth; state Rep. Kristin Robbins, and businessman Kendall Qualls.
