It’s been another beautiful week, weatherwise, in my area. There’s strong murmuring about the open and dry winter we’ve had, and its true that we will need moisture, but this is as good a time for a drought as I can think of. It looks as though the weather pattern will shift to a more normal moisture forecast by the end of February. Hopefully some wet snow and not too cold, as many will start calving about the first of March. Ours will start the end of April, so not too worried about it personally.
The Tierney Roping Clinic as Sturgis, S.D. has changed the date to Apr. 3-4. Paul and Paul David Tierney will be there with breakaway and tie down roping classes. Both cost $400. It will still be at Billy Martin’s Barn east of Sturgis. Call Amy Johnson for info or to sign up at 605-890-2162.
Gillette College Spring Jackpot Roping Series has kicked off. They’ll have goat tying, breakaway, tie down and team roping on Feb. 15, Mar. 1 and 8. Goats at 8 a.m., breakaway at 10, tie down to follow and team roping not before 1 p.m. For more information contact Kayla 307-756-2755.
Don’t forget the Buckaroo Bash on Feb. 21, 5:30 p.m., at the Custer Co. Event Center, Miles City, Mont. There will be auctions, dinner, and dancing to support the MCC Pioneer Rodeo Team. Tickets are advance only and you can get them via http://www.milescc.edu.
Gordon Livestock, Gordon, Neb., will have horse sales on Feb. 24 and Mar. 17. Both at 2 p.m.
The THM Winter Fest Barrel Race will be Feb. 28-Mar. 1 at the James Kjerstad Event Center, Rapid City, S.D. The BFHS Rodeo Team Banquet and Fundraiser Auction is Mar. 7 at the Belle Fourche Community Hall, Belle Fourche, S.D. The doors will open at 4:30 and A will have live and silent auctions, a steak dinner by the Branding Iron at 5 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available from team members.
ARP Barrel Jackpots will be at Gillette College Arena, Gillette, Wyo., on Mar. 7 and May 2. Open 4D, Jr. and Sr. Youth, Futurity and senior sidepots. A Jr. high, Sr. high and college breakaway clinic will be Mar. 22 at The Dex, Huron, S.D. It will cover all aspects of breakaway and have live calves. It’s $400 with a horse, 10 spots available. You can audit from the floor with opportunities to participate. Call/text Riley Baade, 605-359-4018.
A Breakaway Roping and Horsemanship Clinic will be Apr. 2-4 at Atltringer Arena, Devil’s Lake, N.D. It’s $300/day. Day #1 is fundamentals on the dummy; Days #2-3 rope live calves and cover horsemanship to improve your roping skills. To register, go to http://www.kerrykuhn.com.
Arthun Equine Breakaway and Tie Down Clinic will be Apr. 4 at Arthun Arena, Gillette, Wyo. It will cover ground work to roping live cattle., plus a match roping competition. Cost is $500 and they’ll take 10. They will have a team roping clinic on Apr. 11 for $500, taking six headers and six heelers. If bulls are more your thing, then the Bothwell Bull Riding and Bull Fighting School will be just right. It will be Apr. 10-12, and will take Jr. and Sr. youth for $350 for either bull riding or bull fighting.
