Yellow Jacket Men’s and Women’s Rodeo Place Sixth in Cyclone Stampede

AMES, Iowa – The spring portion of the 2025-26 college rodeo season got underway this past Friday and Saturday in the Great Plains Region at the 63rd annual Cyclone Stampede in the Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center. Both the Black Hills State University men’s and women’s rodeo teams tallied sixth place finishes at the event, as the cowboys accumulated 140 team points and the cowgirls totaled 85 team points. Leading the way on the men’s side was Luke Mavity who picked up a second place finish in tie down roping and moved himself into the top-5 of the region with the performance, while on the women’s side it was the freshman duo of Kiera Mavity and Paige Delaney who recorded third place finishes in goat tying and breakaway roping respectively that highlighted four top-5 finishes for the squad.

HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN’S RODEO
Luke Mavity kicked off the spring portion of the season with a big time performance in the tie down roping, putting himself into the conversation for a return trip to the CNFR as he made the jump from No. 9 to No. 4 in the Great Plains Region in the event. Mavity secured 140 points on the weekend, clocking the third-fastest time in the long go (10.9) and the second-fastest short go time (11.5) for a total time of 22.4 for second place overall. It marked a season-best finish and his third top-5 of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN’S RODEO
The Yellow Jackets placed five within the top-10 of the goat tying competition in Ames, highlighted by a third and fourth place finish by Kiera Mavity and Kate Weborg. For Mavity, it was her second top-3 finish of the year, as she began the spring portion of the schedule with a long go time of 7.9 and then tied for the second-fastest short go time of 7.2. In total her time of 15.1 was third overall as she secured 85 points. Weborg notched her first top-5 finish of the season with a long go time of 7.8 and added a short go time of 7.5, the fourth-fastest of the round, to bring her total time to 15.3 and tie for fourth place overall. Weborg accumulated 55 points towards her season total on the weekend.
The trio of Linley Schmitz, Kenzie Homelvig, and Lainey Crago rounded out the five Yellow Jackets in the top-10 of goat tying with finishes of seventh, eighth, and tenth place respectively. Schmitz secured her second top-10 of the season in the event as she clocked times of 7.8 in the long go and 8.0 in the short go for a total time of 15.8 for seventh place and ten points. Homelvig and Crago each posted their first top-10 finishes of the season, with Homelvig recording a time of 7.7 on the long go and 8.4 on the short go for a two go time of 16.1 and eighth place and 15 points. Crago posted only a time on the long go with a time of 7.9 and was unable to complete the try on the short go, resulting in a tenth place finish and total time of 107.9.
Paige Delaney and Briley Anderson led the way for Black Hills State in the breakaway roping with a pair of top-5 finishes. Delaney notched her second top-5 finish of her freshman campaign, collecting a season-best third place finish with a total time of 6.9 seconds to gain 80 points towards the season standings. She recorded a time of 3.2 seconds on the long go and a time of 3.7 seconds on the short go, the third-fastest time of the round to make the move up the standings. Anderson added her first top-5 finish of the season, posting a total time of 7.0 seconds to tie for fourth place and collect 95 points. She recorded the second-fastest time of the long go with a mark of 2.7 and then followed things up with the fifth-fastest time in the short go with a time of 4.3.
Rounding out a trio of Yellow Jackets in the top-10 of the breakaway roping was Molly Gilbert, who recorded a time of 3.5 in the long go, but did not record a time in the short go and resulted in a 103.5 total time. It was Gilbert’s second top-10 of the season, both of which have occurred in the last three rodeos.
Kamry Davis was the lone Yellow Jacket to qualify for the short go of the barrel racing competition, recording a sixth place finish and overall time of 32.77 on two go arounds in Ames. She clocked the fastest time of the long go round at 13.81 and then had the sixth-fastest time of 18.96 in the short go. She tallied 80 points in the weekend as she collected her second top-10 finish of the year in the event.
