Stage 2 Fire Restrictions for Black Hills National Forest in effect July 27, 2026

(Custer, SD, July 22, 2026) — The Black Hills National Forest will implement Stage 2 Fire Restrictions starting at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026, due to critical fire weather conditions.

Fire danger is increasing, and these restrictions are being implemented to protect public and firefighter safety amid current and anticipated elevated wildfire risk. The restrictions apply to all Black Hills National Forest lands within the states of South Dakota and Wyoming, including all developed recreation sites such as campgrounds and day use areas. Restrictions will remain in place until December 27, 2026, unless rescinded earlier.

Under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions, the following are PROHIBITED:

·       Igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal barbecue, or grill, except if using a device solely fueled by liquid or gas that can be turned on and off in an area barren or cleared of all flammable materials within three feet of the device. 36 CFR § 261.52(a)

·       Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle or building. 36 CFR § 261.52(d)

·       Welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with open flame. 36 CFR § 261.52(h)

·       Using an explosive. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(b)

·       Possessing or using a motor vehicle off established roads, motorized trails or established parking areas, except when parking in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle. 36 CFR § 261.56.
