Outside Circle: Wind, Santos wins Iron Man, series kicking off, ropings, clinics and more clinics
The wind is positively howling here as I write this, as it is over several states west and south of me. It’s currently in the 40s so not terribly cold, but I’d have to wonder if a newborn calf could even get stood up in the gale. Hopefully some moisture will come in with the front and not only wet the soil but cut down the fire danger.
Congratulations to Taylor Santos on winning the Iron Man at the Lazy E in Guthrie, Okla. He has a strong S.D. connection as he’s Paul and Robin Tierney’s son-in-law and Jordan’s husband. What a hand!
The 5F Bucking Bulls Jackpot series is kicking off with the first event on Mar. 21 in Wright, Wyo. Entries are open now for it If there are enough mini bull riders they will have them too. There will be five age divisions from 9 to open. To enter contact Shanna Firnekas 307-253-8286. The other series dates are April 11, June 6, all at Wright, Wyo. The finals will be June 27 at Glenrock, Wyo.
There will be an open and loose horse sale at Gordan Livestock Market on Mar. 17, 2 p.m., Gordon, Neb.
A tie down and ribbon roping clinic will be held Mar. 21 for Jr. high, high school and college students. Cost is $400 and $150 to audit. It will be at the Dex, Huron, S.D. For info or to sign up, call Riley Baade 605-359-4018.
Gillette College Rodeo is hosting a Muley Roping Mar. 21, 4 p.m. at the Cam-Plex, Gillette, Wyo. Breakaway open is 3/$120, progressive after one; youth 14 and under is 3/$80, progressive after one. MonDak Quarter Horse Association is having a re-organizational meeting on Mar. 23, 6:30 p.m., at Gramma Sharon’s Family Restaurant, Williston, N.D.
The Jackson Youth Rodeo Series entries are open for the first event on Mar. 29. It will be held at the indoor arena at the Weston Co. Fairgrounds, Newcastle, Wyo. Entries are taken on Saddle Book. Buzzard Bait Bucking Ponies is holding a rough stock rodeo at the DSU Indoor Arena, Dickinson, N.D. on Mar. 29, 1 p.m. They’ll have barebacks, saddle broncs, ranch broncs, calves, steers and jr. bulls. The age groups are 8 and under, 9-11, 12-14, 15-17. Entry fee in all events is $50. Entries will open and close on Mar. 26 by texting Kerry 701-880-8372 with the name, age, weight and skill level of the contestant.
If you’d like to learn how to make a pulled wool saddle pad, this school is for you. Elle McGill will take 10 students for the class on Apr. 18, 8 a.m. at Rockin MC Leather, Miles City, Mont. There will be a Breakaway and Horsemanship clinic Apr. 2-4 at Altringer Arena, Devil’s Lake, N.D. It’s $300/day. Day 1 is fundamentals on the roping dummy. Days 2 and 3 you’ll rope live calves and cover horsemanship to help improve your roping. To register go to http://www.kerrykuhn.com.
Arthun Equine is holding a breakaway and tie down roping clinic Apr. 4 at Arthun Arena, Gillette, Wyo. They are accepting 10 students and will cover groundwork, to live cattle, plus a match roping competition at the end. It’s $500/food included.
