Outside Circle by Jan Swan Wood: Watch for founder, playday series, breakaway, ropings, clinics
The wind is blowing for a change today. I’m sure caught up on it. More rain and less wind would be wonderful. With the fire danger so high its worrisome to have it blowing like this and so dry.
In spite of the wind and dry weather, that cool season grasses are sure greening up in my area and I’m reminded that those founder prone horses and other equines will be grazing it for all they’re worth and can have a reaction very quickly. Cold nights sure put the plant sugars up in the stems that get grazed, so it would probably be a good idea to get the previously foundered ones off the green grass. Watch for symptoms of founder such as standing with front feet extended ahead of normal, laying down when others are not at rest, and short, painful steps when walking. I keep some Bute on hand just in case as your vet will recommend it when you call for advice. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so already overweight horse, mules, burros are particularly at risk.
Jackson Youth Rodeo Series will be having a practice on April 25, noon to 6 p.m., for a $20 donation. The following day will be the second rodeo of the JYR series. All will be at the Weston Co. Fairgrounds, Newcastle, Wyo.
Cowboy States Stock Horse Association Spring Ranch Horse Versatility Show will be having their first event at Central Wyoming College, Riverton, Wyo. Wyoming Slide For the Roses is May 2-3 and entries are due Apr. 27. Entry forms and other info can be found on the Facebook page Cowboy States Stock Horse Association.
Belle Jackpot Association is kicking off the series on May 7. The office will be open for entries from 3:30 to 4:45. Events in both arenas will start at 5 p.m. Peewee events under the cover by the office will start at 4 p.m. Other weries dates are May 23, 28, June 3, 10, plus a rain date to be announced.
Ante Up Breakaway Series will be at the E over D Ranch, Buffalo, Wyo. Dates are May 16, 21, 29; June 12, 18 and 28. Open is $120, guaranteed two head, 10 back for the short go. Entries are open at 5 p.m;, roping starts at 6. Other divisions are youth 15 and under, legends/women over 55, and novice with LTE of less than $1500. You must be a member to enter. The WRTC Memorial Celebration Team Roping is May 23-25, 8 a.m., at Blue Cat Arena, Huntley, Mont.
Energy Downs at Gillette, Wyo., has the race schedule set and they[re raring to go! Dates are May 23, 25, 29, and 31. Wyoming Downs at Evanston also has races June 5-7, 12-14, 19-21 and 26-29.
There will be a MRP Penning and Sorting at Lazy S3 Arena, Wagner, S.D. on May 24, noon MDT.
The Crow Tribe is holding a Memorial Day Open Rodeo on May 25, Arrow Creek Rodeo Grounds, Pryor, Mont. Entries open at 10 a.m. The youth rodeo will be at noon and the open rodeo at 3 p.m. For details, call 406-909-0685.
You probably need to get hthis on your calendar as it will be here before you know it. The Buffalo Youth Rodeo series will be May 27; June 10 and 24; and July 8.all at :30, the final date is July 29 at 4 p.m. All at the Tipperary Arena, Buffalo, S.D.
The HM Arena Roping Club Playday Series near Marcus, S.D. will be May 27; June 3, 10, 24: July 1 with July 8 as a rain date. Message Chasity Martin Jones on Facebook for details and directions to the arena.
The Kaycee Playday will be May 30, 9 a.m., at Harold Jarrard Park, Kaycee, Wyo.
You might want to get your tickets early for the 32nd Annual Casey Tibbs Match of Champions at Ft. Pierre, S.D. on June 6.
A Horsemanship and Cow Work clinic with Tom Curtin will be June 12-14 at the rodeo grounds in Lander, Wyo. Horsemanship is $625, cow work is $725, auditing is $50/day.
