Sale host Alan Johnson and Jim Petik of Keldron, SD, discuss the sale offering at the 39th annual Johnson J Ranch Bull sale.

Alan Johnson and crew held their 39th annual Johnson J Ranch bull sale at Lemmon Livestock on April 25, 2011 to a nice crowd of new and repeat bull buyers.

Over the past few years, Johnson J Ranch has moved their calving season back to May and June to calve on green grass. The benefits of pasture calving results in healthier calves since they are not in the lots, with less feed expense for the cows. With the later calving season, they did not feel comfortable selling yearling bulls, so they are hold bulls over to sell as virgin coming two-year olds.

The first winter, the bulls are fed a high-roughage ration, with just enough grain for some added growth. The next summer they are turned out on grass and not fed any supplement. When the bulls come off grass in November, they resume a high roughage ration in the dry lot. The end result is a group of bulls that are hard and ready to go to work in the breeding pasture. They will cover more cows than a yearling bull, and with the way they have been developed, should remain sound on their feet and legs.
